Abstract
With Isfahan chosen as the capital of the Safavid Empire, and the gradual recovery of the city from the consequences of the period of interregnum and the invasions of the Timurids and Turkomans, urban society entered a new phase of redefining roles and re-establishing order. In this process, the emergence and prosperity of the Biet-al-Lotf neighborhood can be considered an extension of the focal impacts of Isfahan’s urban society, which laid the groundwork for new developments. Therefore, the present research problem is to investigate how the Biet-al-Lotf neighborhood influenced Isfahan’s urban society and its role in the process of urban regeneration. Adopting a theoretical approach and relying on case study methods for causal analysis, this research examines Biet-al-Lotf as a revitalizing event within the context of Safavid urban society. This is accomplished through the purposeful collection of data from library sources. The findings indicate that the Biet-al-Lotf neighborhood played a revitalizing role in the Safavid urban context following the interregnum. On one hand, by meeting the hidden needs of the damaged society and preserving the cohesion and morale of the people, it contributed to the restoration of social life. On the other hand, by creating effective income streams in the urban economy, collected as taxes by the ruling body and allocated to the reconstruction and renovation of the city’s physical structure, it facilitated its development. Consequently, Biet-al-Lotf can be regarded as one of the active manifestations in the process of reviving Isfahan’s social and physical structure.
